England around 1860. Captain James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) uses his last money to purchase the sailing ship "Charlotte Rhodes." Part of the deal is to marry Anne Webster (Anne Stallybrass), the daughter of the previous owner.
But with James, she also marries into a family that is more than complicated. Sister Isabel (Jessica Benton) jumps from one affair to another, causing anger and suffering time and again. Robert Onedin (Brian Rawlinson), on the other hand, almost loses his entire existence due to James' financial escapades. A family, therefore, that provides plenty of explosive material for extremely exciting entertainment.
More than 20 years of the moving family history of the Onedins are recounted in this loving BBC adaptation from the 1970s.
With his last 25 pounds, he embarks on a grand adventure: he convinces Captain Webster to sell him his sailing ship "Charlotte Rhodes." Webster, however, agrees only on one condition: Anne (Anne Stallybrass), his daughter, must be included in the deal and is to become Onedin's wife.
At this point, it becomes clear how calculating the cunning businessman can be. Feelings are no concern for him, and he makes it unmistakably clear to Anne that she is merely part of a business deal and cannot count on his love. However, he has underestimated the unassuming woman. With a lot of patience, a strong will, and her experience with the ship, Anne can stand up to him. This surprises the mate Mr.
Baines (Howard Lang), who serves Onedin. To him, it is a mystery. Thus begins this family story.
With his business acumen and some luck, Onedin gradually manages to realize his dream. However, he must endure numerous setbacks, including the death of his now beloved Anne. Life shows him its many sides, and not least, his dear family often gives him a hard time. For besides James, there is also Robert Onedin (Brian Rawlinson), his brother. Due to James' reckless actions, he nearly loses his entire livelihood as a ship outfitter.
Accordingly, the brothers do not get along well, spurred on by other family members. There is, for example, their sister Isabel (Jessica Benton), who drives the family to despair with her ever-new romantic escapades. She is vain and stubborn, which brings much trouble to the Onedins. The life story of this family of traders and seafarers is lovingly crafted in the series.
The backdrop at sea and the filming aboard various ships give the stories a very special flair.
