Four years after Boo's death, peace has returned to Earth, and everyone is living peaceful days. Goku has become a farmer, and Vegeta spends time with his family.

However, the desire to train to become stronger never leaves them. Goku goes to train with Master Kaio, who tells him that a powerful enemy has awakened from a 39-year slumber: Beerus, the God of Destruction. Beerus is looking for a warrior who appeared to him in a dream, the Super Saiyan God, whom he wishes to challenge. When Beerus arrives on Master Kaio's planet, Goku confronts him to assess his power, and suffers a crushing defeat. Shenron then tells Goku that to achieve the Super Saiyan God stage, the energy of five Saiyans with pure hearts must converge towards another Saiyan with a pure heart.

Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, and Videl (expecting a baby girl, Pan) help Goku transform into this supreme being. Beerus and Goku then engage in a battle that will shake the entire universe, and will end in a draw.
