BLU-RAY: LIFE IS A LONG QUIET RIVER. A FILM BY ETIENNE CHATILIEZ WITH BENOIT MAGIMEL.
In a city in northern France, two radically different families coexist, parodying social stereotypes. On one side, the Groseille family with their six children, living on modest incomes and social assistance, surviving through schemes, thefts, and the harsh realities of life. The eldest son Franck, 18, is in prison for theft. Among their other children, Maurice (nicknamed Momo), 12, is the most resourceful and intelligent. On the other side, the Le Quesnoy family, wealthy and devout Catholics: Mr.
is the regional director of EDF and Mrs. is involved in parish events and cares for their five children. The only trouble comes from Bernadette, 12, who has been acting erratically lately, stealing her mother's makeup and dressing provocatively. The two families, living separate lives, could have never met. But twelve years earlier, at the maternity ward, nurse Josette, upset by her cowardly and contemptuous lover, Dr.
Mavial, a gynecologist, decides to swap two newborns in the crib: the Le Quesnoy son and the Groseille daughter. Thus, Maurice Groseille and Bernadette Le Quesnoy were born out of anger. Josette, faithful to her lover all these years, hoping for a life together after Mavial's death, sees her illusions shattered by the doctor's words: "I can never replace her." To get revenge and ruin his career, she informs the parents of the exchanged babies and Dr. Humiliated, Mavial decides to leave town.
The Le Quesnoy and Groseille families learn the truth in their own ways. The Le Quesnoy family, for a sum of money, convinces the Groseilles to let them have Maurice, pretending to adopt him while keeping Bernadette and not revealing to her that they are not her real parents to spare her trauma. Maurice seems to fit perfectly into the bourgeois world of his birth parents and is kind to his siblings. However, he steals valuable silverware and sells it.
One day, after Bernadette tells him she doesn't like poor people, Maurice reveals that she is not a Le Quesnoy but a Groseille. Bernadette decides to visit her "real" family but is shocked by their rough lifestyle and falls into depression. Maurice arranges for the Le Quesnoy and Groseille children to meet and they all go swimming. Even though the place is forbidden and dangerous, Roselyne, Maurice's ex-girlfriend, makes advances to Paul, Maurice's older brother, who falls in love with her. Jean and Marielle Le Quesnoy are furious when their sons return. They don't understand why they did it.Marielle also sinks into alcoholism. After Bernadette tries to run away, Jean suggests to Marielle that they leave with their daughter and Marie-Thérèse.
He promises to join them with their other children once the school year is over. The night before they leave, Maurice visits the Groseilles, where he is welcomed, and walks home. The film ends with one last appearance of Josette. She now lives in a small house by the beach in Le Touquet with the diminished and broken Mavial. The former nurse savors her victory over the former gynecologist after years of patience and humiliation.
