When the clown hired to entertain his son Jack's birthday party cancels, Kent McCoy, a quiet family man, must put on the clown costume himself. However, he discovers that he cannot take it off and is forced to endure the ridicule of his colleagues.
That same evening, his wife Meg tries to remove the clown nose and only succeeds in injuring him. She also discovers that he has dyed his hair permanently the same color as the wig he was wearing, which he denies.
The next day, Kent tries to find out who the costume belongs to and realizes that the owner is deceased. He then calls a man who claims to know the owner and warns Kent not to touch the costume. The mysterious caller arranges to meet Kent at his house. The man, who introduces himself as Herbert Karlsson, drugs and tries to kill Kent, thinking he is a demon. Kent returns home with Karlsson tied up and gagged.
After putting on a show for his wife, father-in-law, and friends of the young couple, he goes to the police station to deliver Karlsson. On the way, Kent begins to spit out a green substance and starts to transform. They end up having a car accident and Karlsson faints while trying to warn Kent about his costume. Kent flees into the forest.
He comes across a scout camp and attacks a child. The next day, Kent wanders around various places while continuing his transformation into a demonic clown.
He rents a room in a motel and calls his wife to apologize before shooting himself in the mouth, which does not kill him. In another suicide attempt, he accidentally kills the little boy who offered him food upon his arrival at the motel.
Meanwhile, Meg, who is looking for him everywhere, finally arrives at the motel where her husband is hiding. She begs him to come back and tells him she is pregnant. Kent opens the door and they both return home. At the hospital, Meg visits Herbert Karlsson who warns her not to trust her husband. Meanwhile, Jack is bullied by two of his classmates and runs away from school.He returns home and finds his father chained up in the basement. Meg comes back home after learning that her son was not at school and finds him safe.
Kent sneaks into the house of Colton, one of the boys who harassed Jack, and kills him. Later at the McCoys', Shadow, the family dog, suddenly becomes aggressive and attacks Meg.
At the last moment, the dog is decapitated by Karlsson, who wants to help Meg. He explains that you cannot destroy the costume but must kill the person wearing it. They then go to Colton's house and find his partially eaten corpse. Karlsson explains that Kent is attracted to children and will go where they are.
Meg thinks of a playroom and goes there with Karlsson. Kent is in the playroom and kills a child. Blood and an arm flow down a slide, causing panic in the room. Meg and Karlsson manage to find Kent, who speaks with a possessed voice and asks his wife to bring him one last child, after which the demon agrees to return her husband to Meg.
In the parking lot, a child asks Meg to take her home, which she agrees to. The young woman takes the child to an isolated place, leaves the girl outside, and eventually reopens the door, thinking her husband will arrive when it is simply the police. Jack and his grandfather go to the parents of the little boy. Meg arrives, argues with her father, and he is killed by Kent, who has become a real demon. He chases her in the house and attacks her and Jack.
After managing to tie him up, Meg resolves to kill him. FAST, TRACKED, AND CAREFUL DELIVERY.
